If you don’t know, I LOVE glitter! I’d swim in it if I could. And of course I will slap it on anything I possibly can. This is a rather serious addiction, folks. But good news! I often find myself in a “craft or die” kinda mood. I’ve got a pair of black, classic high heels that need a serious makeover. I’ve got a couple good ideas that involve fabric flowers and buttons. But last Sunday I awoke from an awesome 3 hour nap and decided I want these shoes to have glitter on the bottom.
Now I just had to find all the necessary items in mind. But first, let me paint you a picture…
It’s a beautiful summer day. You’re out in the country somewhere. In front of you stands a gorgeous two story home. White, with red shutters. A porch with a swing. Flowers all along the pathway leading up to the door. The house sits on a small hill and you can see land and blue skies for miles around you. Now, imagine what this house looks like after being hit by say…a tornado. Picture the mounds, feet and piles of rubble. Change the house debris to clothes and shoes. Skirts, dresses, tops, cardigans, tank tops, flats, hats, purses, hangers…you get the idea. Condense this giant mess into a 10X11′ area with four white walls. Add a dresser, a loft (because there are two of us living in this space), a piano and other room items. You are now currently standing in my room. At it’s worst the clothes narrowly reached my knees. Yikes! Don’t worry all you clean-freaks, we’re working on it! π
(Nothing with breath was harmed in the making of this imagination)Β
As you can see, it’s almost impossible to find anything you need. I dug around for about five minutes and came out victorious! It might be a mess but it’s fairly organized. With Mod Podge, heels, glitter and brush in hand I got to work on the dining room table.
We already had some tissue paper out so I used that to contain my mess and I found a blue Solo cup in our cabinet. Now let’s get to the deets!
1. Mix a good amount of glitter with some ModPodge in a plastic cup. I wish I could give you some measurements, but I’m not that concise. I wasn’t sure how much I would need so I dumped all of my glitter (which was just about the size of one of these). Add the MP accordingly. Make sure you can mix in all your glitter and neither of them be too over bearing. (I used a sponge brush, Walmart- craft aisle) Looks a little something like this:
Glitter/ModPodge mix
2. Clean your shoes. Lord knows I don’t actually clean my shoes to maintain them. But, I felt it best to get as much dirt and junk off the bottom I could. Pretty self explanatory.
Yucky!
3. Start Painting. I painted on a layer, waited about 3-5 minutes, painted another…etc. In total I did 4 layers. It won’t start out totally even, but I did the best I could. Don’t forget the MP will dry clear and your glitter will be all you can see. I kept having to remind myself it won’t stay white :p
About 2 or 3 coats
Once I was done with the glitter mix they sat for about 24 hours. I usually start a craft when I have other things to get done. If you’re doing this all at once I’d wait about 10 minutes. I then added 2 coats of just MP for a nice seal. I suggest waiting a couple hours after this before you wear them so all the layers can harden.
Final product! Ain't they perdy?!!
I just love them β€ What color would you add to spice up your shoes?! Let me know what you think! π
